Kitchen Backsplash Installation in Tampa Bay

The smallest surface in the kitchen, and the one people stand closest to. Every cut is on show.

Why it matters

A backsplash is judged from eighteen inches away

It is a small area with an unusual number of obstacles: outlets, switches, a range hood, a pot filler, window returns, the underside of the cabinets and the point where the counter meets the wall. Almost none of them line up with each other.

That is what separates a good backsplash from an average one. Not the tile — the cuts. An outlet cut that is two millimetres oversized shows a shadow line. A hood surround that was not centred throws the whole wall off. A run that was started from the wrong end leaves a sliver of tile at the most visible corner.

We set the layout from the range or the sink, whichever anchors the wall visually, then work outward so the cuts land where they are least noticeable and the full pieces land where they matter most.

What we do

The scope, written down.

Everything below is part of the job, not an extra that appears once work has started.

  • Layout from the focal point

The run is centred on the range, hood or sink so the pattern reads correctly from where people actually stand.

  • Outlet and switch cuts

Openings cut tight and square so the plate covers the tile, not the other way around.

  • Range hood surrounds

Hood returns and surrounds detailed so the tile meets the hood cleanly on every side.

  • Faucet and pot filler penetrations

Wall-mounted fixtures cut around precisely, with the escutcheon sitting flat.

  • Counter and cabinet junctions

The counter line and the underside of the cabinets finished with a consistent joint.

  • Full-height runs

Backsplashes taken to the underside of the cabinets or the full height of the wall behind the range.

  • Outdoor kitchens

Backsplash and surround installations built for exterior exposure.

How it runs

The five stages of a backsplash project.

The same defined process on every job, adapted to what this particular service actually needs.

A backsplash is a short installation with a long planning stage. Most of the decisions are made before the first tile is cut.

Start Your Project
  1. Consultation

We walk the space, measure it, and listen to what the finished room needs to do. Goals, materials and expectations get written down before anything else happens.

  2. Planning

Scope, materials, layout and execution details are defined up front — including the axes, joint lines and cut points that decide how the finished surface reads.

  3. Preparation

Furniture and adjacent rooms are protected, the work area is isolated, and the substrate is corrected until it is flat, sound and ready to receive the material.

  4. Installation

Cuts are made and dry-fitted around outlets, the hood and any wall-mounted fixtures before they are permanently set.

  5. Final Walkthrough

We review the finished project item by item with you before it is considered complete — grout lines, edges, silicone, transitions and hardware.

Why General Tile Company

What you are actually paying for.

  • Cuts you can look at closely

Outlets, switches, pot fillers and hood returns cut tight and square — the detail that a close-up photo either survives or does not.

  • Centred on what matters

The layout is anchored to the range or sink so full tiles land at the focal point and cuts fall at the edges.

  • Clean junctions

A consistent joint where the tile meets the counter, the cabinets and the window return.

Where we work

Backsplash across Tampa Bay, Florida.

General Tile Company installs kitchen backsplashes throughout Tampa Bay, including South Tampa, St. Petersburg, Lutz, Wesley Chapel, Lakeland, Hudson, Palm Harbor and Westchase.

A backsplash is often the first project a client brings us — a short, contained job in Westchase or Palm Harbor that upgrades a kitchen without a full remodel. Outdoor kitchen surrounds are a regular request in Hudson and Lakeland, where lanais get used year-round.

Questions

Backsplash, answered.

How long does a backsplash take to install?

Most kitchen backsplashes take two to three days on site, including preparation, installation, grouting and finishing. Mosaic and handmade tile take longer than a straightforward subway or large-format layout because there are more pieces and more cuts.

Do I need to remove the existing backsplash first?

Usually yes. Tiling over an existing backsplash adds thickness that pushes the finished face past the outlets and the counter edge, and it hides whatever condition the wall underneath is in. Removal is normally included in the scope.

Can you cut around outlets and a range hood?

Yes — that is most of the skill in this job. Outlets, switches, pot fillers and hood returns are cut tight and square so the finished plate or escutcheon covers the opening cleanly. We dry-fit the difficult cuts before setting them permanently.

Should the backsplash go full height?

Behind the range it usually should, because a full-height run makes the hood look integrated rather than added. Elsewhere it depends on the cabinets and the material. We will tell you what we think will look right in your kitchen, including when we think a shorter run is the better answer.

Do you install outdoor kitchen backsplashes?

Yes. Outdoor installations use materials and setting systems rated for exterior exposure, which is a different specification from an indoor kitchen even when the tile looks similar.
