  • Flooring One run through the whole floor
Why it matters

The floor is the one surface that touches every room

A floor is continuous. It runs through doorways, past thresholds and around islands, and any error in direction, starting point or level travels with it. Get the first row wrong and the mistake grows across the whole house.

The installation method matters as much as the material. Glued, nailed and floating systems each behave differently over a given substrate, and each has its own requirements for flatness, moisture and expansion. Choosing by habit rather than by condition is where most floor problems begin.

We plan the run before we start: direction, starting line, how the pattern lands at each doorway, where expansion is allowed to happen, and how transitions are handled between materials.

What we do

The scope, written down.

Everything below is part of the job, not an extra that appears once work has started.

  • Layout planning

Direction, starting line and pattern axis chosen so the run reads correctly through every opening.

  • Substrate assessment

Flatness, moisture and soundness checked and corrected before any material is laid.

  • Glued installation

Full-bond installation where the substrate and material call for it, including porcelain and engineered plank.

  • Wood flooring

Solid and engineered hardwood, acclimatised on site before it goes down, then nailed, glued or floated to suit the subfloor.

  • Nailed installation

Traditional nailed-down installation over suitable subfloors.

  • Floating installation

Click-lock LVP and laminate with correct expansion gaps and underlayment.

  • Pattern layouts

Herringbone, chevron and checkerboard set out from a defined axis with balanced perimeter cuts.

  • Transitions and trims

Thresholds, stair nosings and skirting details finished so changes of material look intentional.

How it runs

The five stages of a flooring project.

The same defined process on every job, adapted to what this particular service actually needs.

On flooring, preparation is where the schedule is won or lost. Substrate flatness and moisture are resolved before delivery, not after.

Start Your Project
  1. Consultation

We walk the space, measure it, and listen to what the finished room needs to do. Goals, materials and expectations get written down before anything else happens.

  2. Planning

Scope, materials, layout and execution details are defined up front — including the axes, joint lines and cut points that decide how the finished surface reads.

  3. Preparation

Furniture and adjacent rooms are protected, the work area is isolated, and the substrate is corrected until it is flat, sound and ready to receive the material.

  4. Installation

The first row sets the whole floor. It is laid to the planned axis and checked before the run continues through the rest of the space.

  5. Final Walkthrough

We review the finished project item by item with you before it is considered complete — grout lines, edges, silicone, transitions and hardware.

Why General Tile Company

What you are actually paying for.

  • Method chosen for the substrate

Glued, nailed or floating is decided from the actual slab or subfloor condition, not from habit.

  • Direction planned first

The run direction and starting line are set so the pattern lands correctly at every doorway and island.

  • Transitions that look deliberate

Thresholds, stair nosings and material changes are detailed instead of covered with a strip at the end.

Where we work

Flooring across Tampa Bay, Florida.

General Tile Company installs flooring throughout Tampa Bay, including South Tampa, St. Petersburg, Lutz, Wesley Chapel, Lakeland, Hudson, Palm Harbor and Westchase.

Whole-house flooring replacements are common in Lakeland and Wesley Chapel, where open plans mean a single continuous run across several rooms. In South Tampa and St. Petersburg the subfloors are older and less predictable, so the preparation stage usually carries more of the work.

Questions

Flooring, answered.

Should I choose LVP, laminate or porcelain?

It depends on the room and the substrate. LVP handles moisture well and is comfortable underfoot, which suits open living areas and utility spaces. Laminate gives a hard-wearing surface at a lower cost. Porcelain — including wood-look plank — is the most durable and the best choice where heat, moisture or heavy traffic are involved. We give a recommendation based on the actual conditions in your home.

Do you remove the existing floor?

Yes, removal and disposal can be included in the scope. Whether the existing floor comes up depends on what it is, how it is fixed and whether it can act as a sound substrate for the new material. That gets decided during the consultation, not on the first day of work.

How flat does my slab need to be?

Flatter than most slabs arrive. Every material has a tolerance, and large-format porcelain is the strictest of them. We measure the floor before quoting and include any levelling or grinding in the scope so it is priced up front rather than raised mid-project.

Can you lay herringbone or chevron?

Yes. Both are set out from a defined axis so the pattern is centred correctly in the room and the perimeter cuts balance. It uses more material than a straight lay, which we account for when calculating quantities.

Do you install flooring in Lakeland and Wesley Chapel?

Yes. We install flooring across Tampa Bay, including Lakeland, Wesley Chapel, South Tampa, St. Petersburg, Lutz, Hudson, Palm Harbor and Westchase.
