Outdoor Tile, Travertine & Paver Installation in Tampa Bay

Patios, lanais, stairs and entrances built for Florida sun, Florida rain and the way people actually use them.

Why it matters

Outside, the ground moves and the weather tests everything

An interior floor sits on a stable, dry, temperature-controlled substrate. An exterior one does not. It expands in the sun, gets saturated in an afternoon storm, and sits on ground that settles. The same installation that works perfectly in a living room will fail outdoors within a season.

Falls have to actually shed water away from the house. Movement joints have to be placed where the slab will move, not where they are least noticeable. The setting materials and grout have to be rated for exterior exposure. And on stairs, every riser has to be the same height, because the foot notices what the eye does not.

We build outdoor areas for the conditions they live in: correct falls, real movement joints, exterior-rated systems and a layout that is set out to the shape of the space rather than started at the nearest wall.

What we do

The scope, written down.

Everything below is part of the job, not an extra that appears once work has started.

  • Patios and pool decks

Paver and travertine layouts set out to the shape of the space, with falls that shed water correctly.

  • Lanais

Covered outdoor rooms finished to interior standards using exterior-rated systems.

  • Exterior stairs

Treads and risers set consistently so every step is the same height underfoot.

  • Entrances and walkways

Entry areas and paths levelled and laid to a planned pattern.

  • Ledger and feature walls

Stacked stone and ledger panels on outdoor walls, columns and kitchen surrounds.

  • Falls and drainage

Levels planned so water runs away from the structure rather than toward it.

  • Movement joints

Joints placed where the substrate will actually move, and detailed to stay serviceable.

How it runs

The five stages of a outdoor areas project.

The same defined process on every job, adapted to what this particular service actually needs.

Outdoors, preparation includes the things you cannot see later: falls, compaction, drainage and where the movement joints go.

Start Your Project
  1. Consultation

We walk the space, measure it, and listen to what the finished room needs to do. Goals, materials and expectations get written down before anything else happens.

  2. Planning

Scope, materials, layout and execution details are defined up front — including the axes, joint lines and cut points that decide how the finished surface reads.

  3. Preparation

Base preparation, compaction and falls are established first — everything the finished surface depends on and nobody ever sees again.

  4. Installation

The material is set to the planned layout: continuous alignment, consistent joints, clean cuts at every fixture, penetration and transition.

  5. Final Walkthrough

We review the finished project item by item with you before it is considered complete — grout lines, edges, silicone, transitions and hardware.

Why General Tile Company

What you are actually paying for.

  • Falls that work in a storm

Levels are set so water leaves the structure, tested against the way the space actually drains.

  • Exterior-rated systems

Setting materials, grouts and joints specified for Florida heat, UV and saturation.

  • Stairs that measure true

Riser heights held consistent from bottom to top, because an uneven step is felt before it is seen.

Where we work

Outdoor Areas across Tampa Bay, Florida.

General Tile Company builds outdoor areas throughout Tampa Bay, including South Tampa, St. Petersburg, Lutz, Wesley Chapel, Lakeland, Hudson, Palm Harbor and Westchase.

Waterfront properties in Hudson and Palm Harbor need materials and detailing that hold up to salt air and constant sun. Inland, in Lakeland and Wesley Chapel, the work is more often large pool decks and lanais where the layout has to be set out across a big, irregular area without the pattern drifting.

Questions

Outdoor Areas, answered.

Which materials hold up best outdoors in Florida?

Travertine and pavers are the most common for good reason: they stay comparatively cool underfoot, handle saturation well and can be lifted and reset if the base ever moves. Textured exterior-rated porcelain is an excellent alternative where you want a specific look with very low maintenance.

Can you install over an existing concrete slab?

Often yes, if the slab is sound, has adequate falls and can take the additional height at the door thresholds. If the slab is cracked or falls the wrong way, we deal with that first — installing a new surface over a slab that is already failing just hides the problem for a season.

Do you do exterior stairs?

Yes. Exterior stairs are one of the more demanding parts of this work: riser heights have to be consistent from bottom to top, treads have to fall very slightly forward to shed water, and every nosing has to align. We set them out as a unit rather than one step at a time.

Will the surface be slippery when wet?

It depends on the material and the finish. For pool decks and any surface that will be walked on barefoot and wet, we recommend materials with a suitable slip rating and tell you plainly if a finish you like is not the right choice for that area.

Do you serve Hudson and Palm Harbor?

Yes. Outdoor installations are available across Tampa Bay, including Hudson, Palm Harbor, South Tampa, St. Petersburg, Lutz, Wesley Chapel, Lakeland and Westchase.
