Fireplace surround in stacked natural stone with a raised hearth and a timber beam mantel, by General Tile Company

Fireplace Tile & Stone Installation in Tampa Bay

Floor-to-ceiling surrounds in stacked stone, porcelain and marble, built to hold a single vertical line.

Why it matters

A fireplace wall is a plumb line the whole room is measured against

A floor-to-ceiling surround is usually the tallest continuous surface in the room and almost always the first thing you see when you walk in. Because it runs the full height, any drift in the vertical line is read against the ceiling, the adjacent wall and the mantel all at once.

Stacked stone makes that harder. Ledger panels have irregular faces by design, and the temptation is to let them wander. They still have to stack to a true line, return around corners cleanly, and finish at the ceiling without a tapered course giving the whole thing away.

We build the surround from a set vertical axis, hold the courses to it the whole way up, and plan the corner returns and the termination at the ceiling before the first panel goes on.

What we do

The scope, written down.

Everything below is part of the job, not an extra that appears once work has started.

  • Floor-to-ceiling surrounds

Full-height installations run from hearth to ceiling on a single continuous alignment.

  • Stacked stone ledger

Split-face ledger panels stacked to a true line with clean external corner returns.

  • Large-format porcelain

Minimal-joint surrounds in porcelain panels, including veined and textured finishes.

  • Marble surrounds

Marble and stone surrounds with the veining sequenced across the face.

  • Hearths and mantels

Hearth slabs and mantel details set level and square to the surround.

  • Corner returns

External corners mitred or returned so no cut edge is left showing.

  • Ceiling terminations

The top course planned so the surround finishes at the ceiling without a tapered piece.

How it runs

The five stages of a fireplace project.

The same defined process on every job, adapted to what this particular service actually needs.

The fireplace is planned from the ceiling down as well as the floor up, so the top course lands correctly instead of being cut to fit.

Start Your Project
  1. Consultation

We walk the space, measure it, and listen to what the finished room needs to do. Goals, materials and expectations get written down before anything else happens.

  2. Planning

Course heights are calculated over the full wall height so the surround terminates cleanly at the ceiling and at the hearth.

  3. Preparation

Furniture and adjacent rooms are protected, the work area is isolated, and the substrate is corrected until it is flat, sound and ready to receive the material.

  4. Installation

The material is set to the planned layout: continuous alignment, consistent joints, clean cuts at every fixture, penetration and transition.

  5. Final Walkthrough

We review the finished project item by item with you before it is considered complete — grout lines, edges, silicone, transitions and hardware.

Why General Tile Company

What you are actually paying for.

  • One continuous vertical line

The surround is built to a set axis and held to it from hearth to ceiling.

  • Corners without cut edges

External returns are mitred or wrapped so the corner reads as solid material.

  • Planned terminations

Course heights are calculated so the top of the wall lands on a full piece.

Where we work

Fireplace across Tampa Bay, Florida.

General Tile Company installs fireplace surrounds throughout Tampa Bay, including South Tampa, St. Petersburg, Lutz, Wesley Chapel, Lakeland, Hudson, Palm Harbor and Westchase.

In Tampa Bay a fireplace is usually a design feature rather than a heat source, which raises the standard rather than lowering it — it is looked at far more often than it is lit. Most of our surrounds go into open-plan living rooms in Lutz, Wesley Chapel and Palm Harbor, where the wall is visible from the kitchen and the dining area at the same time.

Questions

Fireplace, answered.

Can you tile over an existing brick fireplace?

Often yes, provided the brick is sound, reasonably flat and can be prepared to take the new finish. Where the face is too irregular, we build it out to a flat substrate first. Which route is right gets decided at the consultation, since it affects both the finished depth and the cost.

How high should the surround go?

Floor-to-ceiling is the strongest result in most rooms, because it makes the fireplace read as part of the architecture rather than as an object on the wall. Where the ceiling is very high or the room is small, stopping at a mantel line can be the better call. We will give you an honest opinion for your room.

Do you install stacked stone?

Yes. Stacked stone ledger panels are one of the materials we use most on fireplace walls. They are set to a true vertical line with mitred or wrapped external corners so no cut edge shows at the return.

Is there a heat clearance to think about?

Yes, and it depends on the appliance. Working fireplaces and inserts have manufacturer clearances that dictate what can be installed and how close it can come to the opening. We work to the appliance specification and tell you up front if a material choice will not comply.

Do you work in Westchase and Wesley Chapel?

Yes. Fireplace installations are available across Tampa Bay, including Westchase, Wesley Chapel, South Tampa, St. Petersburg, Lutz, Lakeland, Hudson and Palm Harbor.
